The Meaning of the Items in the Smudge Kit

Sage is an important ceremonial plant of the Native Americans, used by ancient tribes as incense, cleansing herbs, and to ward off bad luck and evil.

The indigenous people believe that sacred medicines are gifts from the Creator to heal our minds, bodies, and spirits. Also, smudging helps us get rid of the negative energy that is in and around us.

Sage doesn’t only get rid of negative energy, most types of sage also have antimicrobial properties. This means that they keep infectious viruses, fungi and bacteria at bay. Burning sage also releases negative ions into the air. studies have shown the increase of negative ions can act as a natural antidepressant.

Sage isn’t the only beneficial material in the smudging kit. Each part of the kit has its own unique benefit.

Abalone shells are typically used as a smudging bowl. The shell is used as a thermal barrier to protect any surface you place the shell on to burn the medicine it contains.

The turkey feather is used to ventilate and distribute the smoke gently from the smudging process.

While you don’t need the wooden stand for smudging, it’s pretty cool to have if you want to prop up your abalone shell. It is a beautiful way to display your shell even when not in use.

All the sacred items in this smudging kit have been used to smudge for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

Together these sacred elements form a complete kit ideal for anyone who wants to embrace their spirituality, purify themselves, protect themselves, or just want to relax peacefully.

How do you Burn Sage?

Gather your Tools

First of all, make sure you have all the tools listed below on hand and that you have an open door or window before turning on the light. After all, that negativity (not to mention the smoke) must have an outlet to escape.

  • Sage
  • A container to burn sage
  • A fire source (such as a candle or long match)
  • A fanning tool (not essential, but can be useful if you need to cover a large area such as an office or home)

Set your Intentions and Say a Prayer

Intentions are central to smudging practice. So take a moment before lighting the sage to determine exactly what you want to clean or clear from your space.

Next, decide on a prayer or mantra to repeat as you reflect on what that intention sums up. It may be something you make up yourself, or we suggest you just say “I release and I let go of what no longer serves me.”

Light Up

When you’re done, hold the sage at a 45° angle, light it with your candle or match, and let it burn for up to 20 seconds. Then carefully blow out the flame so that you can see orange embers at one end. The smoke should be rising now.

Walk Slowly Around your Space

Walk slowly around your space and let the smoke circulate. Direct the smoke and bad energy to an open window or door for it to escape.

Pay special attention to areas in front of mirrors, in corners, and spaces such as hallways, foyers, and entryways. You can sage your electrical devices like laptops or phones. You can do this by holding the sage stick under the appliances and then swing it around them.

Be Safe

Sage Burning 101: always be there! If you see small embers falling to the ground, stamp them out instantly.

Never leave burning sage unwatched for any reason. Also, be careful not to inhale too much smoke.

Sage smudging is a great way to rid your home or office of stagnant and potentially negative energy. However, it is best not to directly inhale them. The lungs are sensitive organs and any type of smoke can dry out and irritate the mucous membranes.

Extinguish your Sage

extinguish your sage

When you’re ready to put out a sage stick, press firmly on the hot tip in your fireproof container, sand, or dirt until the smoke stops rising.

Do not use water to put out the hot embers. This will destroy the tip of the smudge stick and make it difficult to ignite next time. When you’re done with the stick, you can store it in a container until whenever you’re ready to turn it on again.

How Often Should I Sage Smudge my Home?

There aren’t any hard and fast rules about how often you need to sage smudge your home.

We are our own best guides in identifying negative energies. So pay attention to your intuition. If you are feeling overwhelmed by stress or worry, this is usually an indication that cleansing is needed.

Should Windows be Opened While Smudging?

Smudging can be used to remove negative energy from anything and can be performed as often as needed. It’s a good idea to open your window or door while smudging. Negative energy must have a place to go!

If no window or door is open, the negativity will not go away. However, if you’re increasing the energy of the space or using sage to have antibacterial properties or to evoke dreams or lucid visions, keep the windows closed and go clockwise to invite positive energy to come in. It is therefore unnecessary to open the windows in this instance.
