With more advanced technology hitting the market everyday, many worry about the potential impact on their health. Check out our EMF levels chart 2022.

EMFs (electromagnetic fields) are everywhere around us. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the average person is exposed to about 50 milli-Gauss of electromagnetic fields from electrical devices such as computers, smartphones, TVs, power lines, cell towers, Wi-Fi networks, as well as natural sources.

While some studies suggest that exposure to EMFs can cause cancer, other research shows no link between them and health problems. Still, experts recommend limiting your exposure to EMFs whenever possible. In this article, we will share some fascinating facts about EMFs and how they impact our lives.

At Orgone Energy, we have a wide range of products that can help you reduce the harmful effects of EMF exposure. From whole-home protection such as our Geoclense or Dome Schumann Resonance Orgone Generators to personal protection such as Phone Protection, pendants and shungite.

What is Considered High EMF Exposure?

via GIPHY

So let’s first discuss what we mean by high EMF exposure. There are several measuring meters on the market and they all achieve different values and many even employ different units of measurement. So, for the purposes of this article, we will only discuss dangerous levels of the electric field, magnetic field, and radiofrequency (RF) radiation.

Of course, these levels will fall well below what your meter reads, but it is helpful to know what level you need to be concerned about so you can take action and reduce your exposure.

Let’s talk about each individually. It is important to point out that it is somewhat difficult to determine at what level EMF radiation damage occurs, as many organizations, researchers, governments, and regulators have differing opinions regarding these levels. We will talk about this as we go along.

High Magnetic Field Values

via GIPHY

Residential magnetic field readings above 1 MilliGauss (mG) are considered high.

When it comes to magnetic field safety guidelines, most regulators rely on ICNIRP guidelines or IEEE recommendations. ICNIRP has even stricter guidelines than IEEE and recommends maximum exposure limits of 2000 mG.

Let’s give it some perspective.

The Bioinitiative Report, which we hope you are familiar with, is a report by 14 scientists from around the world, summarizing the results of hundreds of studies on the biological effects of electromagnetic radiation on the body.

In 2012, a total of 29 scientists updated the report after reviewing 1,800 other studies, ultimately releasing a nearly 1,500-word report on these dangers.

Although the Bioinitiative report contained many conclusions, one of them was a recommendation of 1 mG for residential magnetic fields.

If you own a quality EMF meter like the Trifield TF2, you will possibly notice readings around your house between 0.1 mG and 1 mG, usually hovering around 0.4 or 0.5 mG. These are the ambient levels you would probably expect to find in a modern home. If you reside in an apartment building, the levels are probably even higher.

Why We Trust the 1mG Recommendation

The reason we trust the 1 mG recommendation over the ridiculous 2000 mG recommendation from agencies like ICNIRP is that it’s based on unbiased research by almost 30 scientists around the world who reviewed more than 2,000 studies related to the biological damage of electromagnetic radiation.

After analyzing these studies and working hard to develop the report, they concluded that 1 mG is the upper limit you should be exposing your body to.

New research, such as a study by researchers at McGill University in Canada, suggests that biological damage to the body can occur even at concentrations below 1 mG.

However, there are different estimates of what the dangerous levels are, and we don’t want to get too far into the weeds. So for now, it looks like anything over 1 mG is probably the most believable value for dangerous magnetic fields.

It is also important to point out that this recommendation is based on the environmental conditions of the living spaces, i.e. where you spend most of your time.

If you take your EMF meter and place it near an electronic device, particularly electronics with a motor, you’ll get readings much higher than this. For instance, your computer might give you readings well above 100 mG if you are too close to it.

That’s why we use the inverse square law of physics, which basically states that if we double our distance from an EMF radiation source, we decrease our exposure to EMF radiation.

Therefore, any distance you can get from sources of radiation will reduce your exposure exponentially. That’s why, for the purposes of this article, we are talking about ambient measurements in a living space where you spend considerable time, such as a living room or bedroom.

High Electric Field Values

via GIPHY

Electric field values in living spaces greater than 10 Volts per meter (V/m) are considered high.

Much less is said about dangerous electric field radiation than about magnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation. This is partly because magnetic field radiation is more common and somewhat more widespread than electric fields.

As it is a less discussed form of electromagnetic radiation, there’s less information about it, but we would like to summarize why we have concluded that ambient readings higher than 10V/m are probably high.

If you walk around your house in areas away from electronic devices like your TV or computer, you will possibly get readings between 1 and 5 V/m.

Let’s look at some analysis from different research groups of what is considered a high electric field value.

German Building Biology Group

According to a report by the German Building Biology Group, the following findings are made:

Less than 1V/m – No concern

1 to 5 V/m – Slight concern

5 to 50 V/m – Serious concern

Greater than 50 V/m – Extremely concerning

To clarify what this means, below is their description of these categories.

No Concern: This category offers the highest level of precaution. It is a reflection of the unexposed natural conditions or the usual and almost unavoidable background level of today’s modern living environment.

Slight Concern: As a precautionary measure, particularly with respect to vulnerable and ill individuals, remediation should be performed whenever possible.

Serious Concern: Readings in this category are not justifiable from the point of view of building biology, they require action. Remediation should happen soon. Besides several case studies, scientific studies point to health problems and biological effects within this reference range.

Extreme Concern: These readings require immediate and consistent action. In this category, international recommendations and guidelines for occupational and public exposures can be met or even exceeded.

via GIPHY

ICINRP

Now, for comparison, let’s look at the version of a regulator of what electric field values you should be worried about: 5000 V/m.

Ponder about how extreme this difference is. When you put your EMF meter directly on an actively running iMac, you’ll likely get electric field readings of about 400 V/m. This should tell you that the limits of these agencies are far from a level of protection.

General Consensus

From our own research and understanding, there seems to be a general consensus (particularly in Europe) that habitual spaces should be less than 10V/m at ambient levels.

Any reading above that is certainly not an immediate problem, but you should use your EMF meter to determine where the higher readings are coming from so you can fix the exposure.

Fortunately, the electric field values are quite stable, and consistent, and constantly fluctuate with distance.

Therefore, locating a source of electric field radiation in your living space is a lot like the game of hot and cold you might have played as a child. If you walk around your house and see readings above 10 V/m, start moving in one direction, and if the values increase, continue; if not, go back to the starting point and try another direction.

Using this method, you should be able to locate electronic devices that emit large amounts of radiation.

High Radio Frequency (RF) Values

via GIPHY

Indoor radiofrequency values greater than 1 mW/m² (milliwatts per square meter) are considered high.

Alright, now let’s look at one of the most damaging and prevalent types of EMF radiation – radiofrequency. This is the form of radiation that cell phones, Wi-Fi networks, cell towers, etc. expose you to.

The only thing we would like to point out here is that when using an EMF meter to measure radiofrequency radiation, it is important to look at the peak number and not the main number on the screen. On the Trifield TF2, for instance, the peak number is at the top left of the digital display.

The reason for this is that when data is sent over radiofrequency, it is sent in packets and is not consistent, like electric or magnetic field readings. Therefore, you need an EMF meter that measures and displays these peak levels to really understand how much radiation you are exposing yourself to.

Ok, now let’s talk a bit about why we chose 1 mW/m² as the high value for radiofrequency emissions. This is the present conclusion of the Bioinitiative report.

In fact, they even state the following in their conclusions:

“At least five (5) new studies on cell towers report biological effects in the range of 0.003-0.05 μW/cm2, at levels below those of 2007 (0.05-0.1 μW/cm2 was the range below which no effect was seen in 2007).

Researchers report difficulty concentrating, headaches, and behavioral problems in adolescents and children; as well as headaches, sleep disturbances, and difficulty concentrating in adults.

Public safety standards are 1,000 to 10,000 times or higher than levels commonly reported in cellular base station studies today to cause biological effects.

What Does This Mean?

via GIPHY

First, to clarify: 0.1 µW/cm2 (microwatts per square centimeter) equals 1 mW/m² (milliwatts per square meter), just so you understand the conversions. Thus, this quote indicates that new studies report biological effects in the range of 0.003-0.05 µW/cm2, which would correspond to 0.03 to 0.5 mW/m².

Sadly, most regulatory bodies set safe levels for RF exposure at levels 1,000 to 10,000 times higher than these levels.

You are probably most familiar with SAR, or Specific Absorption Rate, which we have written several articles about. In fact, SAR is the only government regulation with which manufacturers of devices that give off RF radiation (such as cell phones) must comply.

For instance, in the US, all cell phones must have a SAR rating of less than 1.6 W/kg. This means that the body cannot absorb more than 1.6W of energy per kilogram of body weight.

Many cell phone manufacturers produce devices that do not meet this standard. However, as you can read in our articles, more and more scientists and researchers find that these levels are far from protective levels.

If you bring your EMF meter closer to your cell phone, you will notice spikes of up to 10mW/m² even when surfing the internet. This is well above what most scientists and researchers would consider a safe level.

EMF Levels Chart 2022

EMF radiation levels chart 2022 and the reasons the levels are recommended are listed below.

1. The EMF Levels Chart 2022 FCC Recommendation

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) based its recommendations on the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines of 1998.

The ICNIRP standards are based primarily on acute heating effects. It’s based in Munich and claims it’s about protecting us from non-ionizing radiation. They’re revising their standards, but they’re still focusing on the heating effect, which is how hot our body tissues get when in the path of wireless radiation and even say:

“The critical human health and safety impact of RF exposure is the heating of exposed tissue. RF fields can penetrate the body (the higher the frequency, the shallower the penetration depth), and vibrations from polar or charged molecules inside cause friction and therefore heat.”

But wait! What about the thousands of studies linking the biological effects of DNA damage to reduced fertility (less and less energetic sperm) to wireless, non-ionizing radiation? This level is shown on the meter as Flashing Red or Extreme.

Well, there are a few issues with these limits. And even if the EMF levels in your area are below these levels, that doesn't mean they aren't dangerous.

2. The EMF Radiation Chart: Orgone Energy Warning Level

via GIPHY

Our recommended “alert level” is not suitable for bedrooms or family living spaces. This level is a warning that the wireless EMF is high and the device should be turned off or the area should be avoided. We recommend you move away from the radiation-emitting device or environment if you experience this level.

Much lower than the FCC but higher than other recommended levels, this is based on the real-world levels most people encounter today. To maintain this level, it is important to minimize exposure with distance.

Our recommended Do Not Exceed reading is a peak of 2000 µW/m² (0.2 µW/cm² microwatts per square centimeter).

These high levels are typically observed within 10 to 12 inches of a cordless phone or within 15 to 20 feet of a wireless router.

We often measure 25,000 to 45,000 µW/m² near cell phones, laptops, and tablets and 50,000 to 150,000 µW/m² close to a wireless router.

Unfortunately, that is what we are seeing right now, and that is why we say “Distance is your friend” when it comes to reducing EMF exposure.

3. Safe EMF Levels Chart from the BioInitiative Report

via GIPHY

A group of fourteen scientists, public policy, and public health experts authored the 2007 BioInitiative report. The report summarized health effects, research, and recommendations for dealing with EMF radiation.

After reviewing the scientific evidence supporting the health effects of wireless EMF radiation, ranging from sleep problems to brain tumors, they stated that a precautionary limit of 0.1 µW/cm² (0.614 V/m) should be adopted for outdoor, cumulative radiofrequency exposure.

Frankly, this level of ambient energy is higher in many public and outdoor places. This recommended level was based on bodily exposure, which occurs naturally when we are exposed to energy from our surroundings, energy that simply floats through the air as it dissipates from stronger levels coming directly from the antenna of all devices.

This reflects current RF science and the prudent public health measures that would be reasonably established for pulsed radiofrequency exposures where people live, work and attend school.

“This level of radiofrequency is experienced as whole-body exposure and may be chronic exposure when there is wireless voice and data transmission coverage for cell phones, PDAs, and pagers, as well as other sources of RF emissions.

Some studies and several anecdotal accounts of ill health have been reported at lower levels. For now, however, you could avoid some of the most disproportionate burdens levied on the public near these establishments.

While this target level of RF does not prevent further implementation of WI-FI technologies, we also recommend implementing wired alternatives to WI-FI, especially in libraries and schools, so that children are not exposed to high levels of RF until they know more about the possible health consequences. This recommendation should be considered as an interim precautionary limit for preventive measures.”

4. EMF Levels Chart from the Building Biologists

The IBE ( Institute for Bau-biologie & Ecology) has specialized in creating healthy environments for 31 years. It trains consultants in the building biology method to create non-toxic homes, offices, and schools. This nonprofit institute covers everything from toxic tap water and mold to EMF mitigation.

These are the building biology standards for healthy and safe bedrooms. No more than 10 µW/m² (microwatts per square meter) is what most building biologists say is the wireless exposure limit for EMF radiation or radiofrequency electromagnetic fields.

The guidelines are aimed at people who are sensitive to electromagnetic radiation and how much they should limit exposure in sleeping areas. That is why we’re focused on controlling your home environment by migrating to less powerful Wi-Fi routers and smart devices, particularly in sleeping spaces. Radiation at or just above this level would show a yellow light on your meter.

Building biologists access and mitigate all types of electromagnetic fields. Therefore, they recommend values for magnetic and electric energy readings.

Electric and magnetic fields can also emanate from your devices and will be detectable from house wiring, power outlets, appliances and household items such as fans, hair dryers, electric blankets, and even PEMF devices like a Beemer may have these detectable fields.

Most building biologists advise you to keep EMF exposure from electric fields in your home below 1.5 volts per meter.

You can find electrical EMFs near walls, from cords, lights, and items with power cords, and in or close to electrical outlets, on your computer, laptop, chargers, or other objects that are being charged. Keep the level of the magnetic EMF you are exposed to - to only 1.5 milligauss is the recommendation of most building biologists.

5. BioInitiative Report 2012

via GIPHY

BioInitiative Report Status 2012 recommends 0.034 (V/m) and 0.0003 µW/cm². The BioInitiative Working Group, this time with 27 clinicians, scientists, and public policy experts, published an update in 2012.

This respected group led by Dr. David Carpenter and Cindy Sage, reviewed more than 1,800 studies and refined its recommendations on more evidence and studies.

They have created an amazing chart detailing research on the health effects of EMFs and corresponding levels of EMF exposure. The recommendation is lower than before; the authors say:

“Levels of biological responses are remarkably low (down to picowatt and nanowatt power density levels).

New studies focus on reproduction and fertility, neonatal and fetal effects, behavioral and cognitive problems in children, and neurological damage.

There are more studies on cell base stations with longer trial periods, much more information on genetic damage and confirmation of an increased risk of brain tumors, not 1 or 2 studies, but many studies and many authors, including the World Health Organization's massive 13-INTERPHONE STUDY countries.

There are numerous studies examining the effects of cell phone radiation (including in standby mode), exposure to wireless laptops, maternal cell phone use leading to impaired fetal brain development in offspring, and other evidence that the blood-brain barrier and memory are at risk from mobile phone use. There’s evidence from animal and human studies that key areas of the brain are negatively affected by radiofrequency radiation on a legal level.

In 2014, the group released an update recommending that the use of laptops by children be strongly discouraged. The 0.034 V/m level means you should be in the solid green zone on your meter.

6. The Austrian Medical Association (AMA)

This is the recommended level for people with multi-chemical sensitivity, electrosensitivity, and EHS.

In 2012, the Austrian Medical Association established safe levels for treating EMF sensitivity and health conditions that may in fact be EMF-based.

Non-specific health problems, often stress-related, are increasing rapidly and increasingly challenging clinicians with complex differential diagnoses.

A cause that has received little attention so far is the increasing exposure to electrosmog at work, at home, and during leisure time, which adds to chronic stress in private and professional life.

It is correlated with a general situation of chronic stress that can lead to exhaustion.

It really is a low level, and it usually flashes green on an easy-to-read EMF meter. The AMA has advised that this is a safe level to be exposed to for a period of four hours per day.

They found that levels above 0.5 microwatts per square centimeter were “far above normal”. Note the wide discrepancy between FCC safety standards and those of EMF advocacy groups (which are based on current research).

Surprising “Danger Zones” in the Average Home

Look around your house, do you see anything that is dangerous to your health? At first glance, maybe not. What can your old coffee machine or innocent smart TV do to you? Well, as you have likely guessed, they can actually have a big impact over time...and not in a good way.

It may come as a surprise, but the electronics and appliances you use in your bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen emit potentially harmful electromagnetic fields.

Note that the recommended safety level is 0.5mG and the maximum would be 2.5mG, but 1.0 or less is better.

For example, let’s look at your living room: most homes have televisions, computers, cordless phones, and vacuum cleaners that are used in the living room on a daily or weekly basis. Sadly, these appliances and devices can turn your living space into a dangerous zone.

  • For example, computers can expose you to 4 to 20 mG.
  • Televisions can give off around 5 to 100 mG.
  • Vacuum cleaners can emit 230 to 1300 mG.

Now, what about your bathroom and bedroom?

You might have a fluorescent light by your bed and a hair dryer by your sink. Of course, a washing machine should not be missing either, but it can be placed somewhere else.

But look at this:

  • The lamps can emit between 400 and 4000 mG of radiation.
  • The hair dryer’s emissions can range from 60 mG to 20,000 mG.
  • Meanwhile, washing machines can emit a range from 8 mG to 200 mG.

If that is not enough to pique your interest, wait until you see your kitchen:

  • Microwaves can expose you to radiation from 100 mG to 500 mG.
  • Blenders also measure high, releasing 50 mG to 220 mG.
  • Coffee pots aren’t bad by comparison, but they still put out 6 mG to 29 mG.

As you can see, we have to be vigilant about radiation levels in our living spaces as high EMF values are found where you least expect them.

How to Protect Yourself from EMF Exposure

The steps you can take to reduce your exposure to EMF depend on the type of radiation you are concerned about. Read on to find out what steps you can take.

Low to Medium Frequency EMFs

Remember that this EMF category includes extremely low-frequency EMF (ELF-EMF) and radiofrequency EMF (RF-EMF). Any electrical device generates this type of radiation. These devices range from vacuum cleaners and refrigerators to computer monitors and televisions (when turned on).

According to the WHO, radiofrequency and extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields are unlikely to have adverse health effects. You need to feel safe when using your appliances and cell phone. Power lines are also considered safe as long as you keep a safe distance.

The EMF strength around devices rapidly decreases with distance. At one foot, the magnetic fields surrounding most devices are over 100 times lower than the ICNRP guideline limit for the general public.

Do not sit or stand close to appliances. Among the best ways to avoid EMF exposure in your home is to stay away from your appliances. You have to get close to turn on the TV, open the microwave or fridge, and load the washer. Just keep these close encounters short and don’t sit next to equipment or let your kids do it.

Put down your phone. Put the phone away from you, particularly when you are not using it. At night when you’re asleep, put it in another room.

Use your phone’s speakerphone or headset. This will minimize radiofrequency exposure to your head. Headphones generate and give off fields, but not as much as your cell phone. By using headphones or speakers, you can significantly reduce the strain on your head.

Don’t carry your cell phone in your pocket. Try carrying your phone in a bag or briefcase when you go out.

Disconnect electronics and power from time to time. Take a day without electronics, or even several days. Your body will thank you!

High-Frequency EMFs

Please note that this is the type of radiation that is potentially hazardous to your health. High levels of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields can damage cells and DNA. Small amounts of this radiation come from medical equipment such as X-ray machines and UV rays from the sun or tanning beds.

Try these tips to reduce associated risk and high-level exposure:

  • Limit x-rays. Do only medically necessary X-rays.
  • Limit your time in the sun. You need sun for your health, but not too much. Also, avoid the sun in the middle of the day when the rays are strongest.
  • Limit the time spent in the solarium (tanning beds). If you need to get that summer tan fast, just limit your time under the lights.

If you want to calculate your effective dose of ionizing radiation per year, you can try the EPA dose calculator. It includes an EPA warning that ionizing radiation is a dangerous type of EMF because it can potentially damage DNA and body tissue.
