Ever since the introduction of gadgets to the populace, EMF or Electromagnetic Field radiation doesn't only come from natural sources anymore. They now come from artificial sources as well now. Devices in modern life make life so much easier, so it's ridiculously easy to surround ourselves with as much tech as possible. The only drawback though, is that the EMF radiation around us only keeps on increasing with no end in sight. What is Electromagnetic Field?
EMF, as you know, is the combination of two variables: The first one, which is electric fields are created as a result of differences in voltage in a device. Electric fields can be present even though you've turned off their source.
The second variable is a magnetic field which forms when electric current flows. If that doesn't happen, there won't be any magnetic field generated. Non-ionizing and Ionizing EMF
First, you have to know the difference between non-ionizing and ionizing fields. In EMF theory, there's something called quanta and its referred to as those particles that carry fields. In other words, you can liken quanta to a vehicle of sorts, that fields use in traveling from one end to the other. That said, the thing with these particles is that they all have different energy levels.
For example, if you were to look at EMF with ionizing radiation, their quanta carry more than enough energy to sever bonds between molecules. On the other hand, non-ionizing EMF is low-key. Or better yet, we can say that the fields and thus, their store of quanta are not strong enough to break chemical bonds. So compared to the former, it's quite mild.

The Main Sources of Low, Intermediate, and High-Frequency Fields
- The time-varying EMF produced by electrical appliances are an example of extremely low frequency (ELF) fields, which generally have frequencies up to 300 Hz; our power supply and all devices using electricity are the primary sources of ELF fields.
- The frequencies of intermediate frequency (IF) fields range from 300 Hz to 10 MHz; anti-theft gadgets, computer screens, and security systems are the primary sources of IF fields.
- Radio frequency (RF) fields include frequencies of 10 MHz to 300 GHz; television, radar, and cellular telephone antennas, radio, and microwave ovens are the primary sources of RF fields.
Why Do People Consider it Dangerous?
People with the right knowledge know how EMF (both the ionizing and non-ionizing ones) affects the human body due to their different quanta count. So what we'll be doing here is to break down of how everyday household items or gadgets can pose harm.
Even though this technology is relatively still new, it's not as safe as it sounds. Why? Wi-Fi technology works in the same range as a microwave. In other words, the technology work in the 2.4 GHz frequency, which is known to cause issues over long-term exposure. For example, some specialist organizations and individuals have started noting the side effects of Wi-Fi in schools. The teachers, most of the time, do not feel any effects due to the physical maturity that age brings. On the other hand, the students feel a range of symptoms that span the following.
- Feeling faint
- Racing heart or irregular heartbeat
- Chest pain or pressure
- Weakness, and
- Difficulty concentrating

Out of an endless list of EMF sources, power lines were mentioned to be under regulation by different bodies. Power lines run underground, beneath our homes or overhead, across our houses.

Consequences of Too Much EMF Radiation in the Long Run
While there isn't any concrete evidence on whether or not EMF radiation directly triggers certain illnesses/diseases, there's still the fact that cases do occur and most of them are only possible due to long-term exposure to EMF. To that, below are some of the side effects of EMF radiation that we know.
1. EMF Radiation May Cause Cancer
As you may or may not know, the primary courses of cancer according to research on how environments and sources in that environment include cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, and microwaves. We’ll mention two related pieces of research that we found.
In more than four research reports, EMF is one of the likely causes for leukemia in children due to the introduction of damaging carcinogens.
Also in 2016, a $25 million government study found out that smartphone radiation can increase the risk of malignant gliomas in the brain and schwannomas of the ear. Both of them are tumors.
2. EMF Radiation Has Adverse Effects on the Brain
True, EMF radiation through our cell phones is not necessarily bad: especially if you're in an area where your smartphone isn't struggling for signal. But at the same time, that doesn't mean it doesn't have any effect.
“EMF radiation causes changes in brain glucose metabolism after cell phone use” was the statement made to explain. The result of this, in better terms, is that an increase in brain glucose metabolism could lead to inflammation in the brain.
3. Electromagnetic Radiation Can Cause Dementia
A lab test conducted involved the exposure of cell phone radiation to subjects. The results, to say the least, are shocking. Electromagnetic radiation can cause symptoms of dementia (memory loss specifically) and can also damage DNA, which leads to cancer (another test highlighting the same).
All of these recorded effects occurred in a matter of only two hours. What the scientists noticed is that EMF radiation weakens the barrier between the circulatory system and the brain, hence the holes are the entry points for toxins to enter the brain.
4. EMF Radiation May Affect Levels of Concentration and Attention
A study made in 2017 shows that EMF negatively affects our ability to concentrate and stay attentive to topics generally. The sources once again are cell phones. Though this time, it doesn't take long for side effects to show.
Researchers noticed that upon using cell phones for more 90 min in a day, it subsequently gets harder to concentrate on whatever task we have. This is indeed unsetting, as many of us work online.
5. EMF Radiation Can Cause Psychiatric and Neurological Problems
In over two dozen studies reviewed, researchers noted that EMF radiation causes psychiatric and neurological issues in people. This report for one says EMF radiation causes changes in human nerve function in the body. There, it affects things such as our mood and sleeping patterns.
6. EMF Radiation Can Lead to 25% Reduce in Salivary Antioxidant Levels
Using smartphones may damage antioxidants in our bodies due to EMF radiation, this report says. While this doesn't sound too bad (at least when compared to most others), you may need to take a deep pause on that. Our saliva is instrumental in fighting pathogens. It's the body’s first line of defense against microbial infections looking to get into our systems.
As you must have noticed, cell phones are the sources of most of the adverse effects of EMF radiation. This is in part due to the rapid increase of cell phone usage over the years, and also because of our reliance on it nowadays
EMF Radiation Danger Levels
For the danger levels of EMF radiation, the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) is in charge of the international guidelines for EMF exposure. These guidelines are from the organization, and they have years of research backing them up.
Note: V/m means volts per meter, and it’s how EMFs are measured. The higher the V/m, the stronger the EMF radiation will be.
For each of these rules, there are no health issues involved in as much as the exposure to EMF isn't higher than any of them.

What are the Symptoms of EMF Radiation?
The symptoms of EMF radiation are wide and varied due to the randomness at which they come. So the ones we'll be listing are not written in stone. They may or may not change, anytime in the future.
- Changes in memory
- Dysesthesia (a painful, itchy sensation)
- Lack of focus
- Disturbances in sleep, including insomnia
- Depression and depressive symptoms
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Skin burning and tingling
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Restlessness and anxiety
- Changes in an electroencephalogram (which measures electrical activity in the brain)

Distance From Your Gadgets is Important
You should take the 'Distance’ part both literally and otherwise. As someone living in the 21st century, you're always near your phone, either tapping away as usual or waiting for a message. Recommendation for 2019 says you should avoid using your cell phones for too long a period and should also avoid keeping your phones in your pocket or bra.
At this point, there’s probably no one that can ridicule the reasons for avoidance. So make sure that both your laptop and cell phone stay some distance away from you. Avoid using your computer on your lap if you're working for extended periods. Also while you're doing that, make sure you use a separate keyboard and mouse.
Use the Alternative to Bluetooth Speaker
On your cell phone, the only alternative you have compared to Bluetooth speakers is your speakerphone. While it’s true that the effects are minuscule, we shouldn't take that many risks. We say this because enough research on the impact of EMF radiation hasn't been done to know the full range of its effects. Though on the side, something like a Bluetooth speaker will be closer to the brain, and those devices, like any, also emit EMF radiation.
Earthing is a Nice Option
Earthing is a phenomenon where you must have direct contact with the earth. By that, an example is walking barefoot on the ground. This simple action brings you directly in contact with electrons found all over the surface of the planet. Nevertheless, earthing is still undoubtedly a weird solution, but it works.
Researchers have recently done a study on a group of individuals wherein they measured the voltage present in the subject’s body grounded and ungrounded. The test was done on different parts of the body, with the result (a positive one) leaning heavily towards being grounded. In simpler terms, the voltage they recorded in the subjects’ body was higher when they were ungrounded than when they were grounded.
Adjust Your Diet
Since what you eat directly has effects on your body, eating the right diet will easily strengthen it from EMF radiation. To that, the recommendation is to eat foods rich in Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC). This includes the likes of asparagus, dark chocolate, kidney beans, wild blueberries, cinnamon, walnuts, prunes, vegetables, pomegranate seeds, rosemary, cruciferous, dates, broccoli, and cilantro.
While you're shopping for those, make sure you also add nutrients iodine, zinc, Vitamin D3, noni, melatonin, selenium, B-complex vitamins, holy basil, spirulina, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Protect Your Home from EMF Radiation
There are a lot of EMF radiation preventive measures you can take. There are some of them that are conventional, and then there are others or might we say, devices whose job is to protect from EMF radiation.
For the former, we recommend going for the following.
- Always unplug all of the devices that are not in use around you. This should help you save up on the bills and at the same time, drastically reduce the presence of EMF radiation in your home.
- Avoid halogen and fluorescent lighting. Read the reason why we say this here.
- If you are using Wi-Fi in your home, make sure you switch it off whenever it’s not in use. Also, make sure that you keep the router away from a part of the house where you spend the most time.
As for the unconventional methods that you can use, they're quite many and individually different. But we'll be listing just 2.
- You can purchase a paint that's resistant to EMF radiation from the power lines around your home. This way, in as you're not outside the house, you're well protected.
